In D4, it is easy to judge a farming session by the number of D4 items that fill your inventory. A full bag can make a run feel productive, while a nearly empty inventory can seem disappointing. However, experienced players know that the real value of a session comes from measurable progress, such as XP gained, Glyph levels increased, or crafting materials collected for important upgrades.

The same principle applies when deciding which D4 items are actually worth keeping. Not every legendary drop deserves attention, and spending too much time comparing mediocre equipment can reduce your overall efficiency. Instead of chasing every possible drop, players should focus on activities that directly support their current build and progression goals.

Measure Progress Instead of Loot Quantity

The number of items that drop during a run does not always reflect how much your character has improved. A fast Nightmare Dungeon that gives strong experience and useful Glyph XP may provide more value than a slower run with several additional legendary items.

XP per hour is one of the simplest ways to measure this difference. If your character can clear a lower-tier activity quickly, there is little reason to force yourself through content that takes significantly longer. Higher difficulty can be rewarding, but only when your build can handle it without losing too much time.

This approach is especially important when working toward Paragon progression. Gaining levels provides Paragon points, which can improve your character through additional stats and powerful board bonuses. For many players, consistent experience gains are more valuable than collecting gear that will eventually be salvaged.

Make Glyph Progress Part of Your Farming Plan

Nightmare Dungeons have another major advantage because they provide Glyph XP. If your primary Glyphs are still underdeveloped, this should be one of your main reasons for running them.

A useful target is to work toward Level 15 for the increased Glyph radius and eventually Level 21 for maximum Glyph progression. Rather than asking how many items you received from each dungeon, look at how much Glyph XP you gained and how long the run took.

Once your key Glyphs reach the levels you need, you can change your farming priorities. This prevents you from continuing to run an activity simply because it has become familiar. Your character's needs should determine where you spend your time.

Use the Rule of Threes

A simple set of habits can help improve your farming speed.

The first is the three-minute rule. If a Nightmare Dungeon takes too long to complete, consider lowering the tier. Clearing content quickly is often more efficient than struggling through a higher tier.

The second is the three-screen rule. Avoid chasing isolated enemies when you could be moving toward larger groups. Dense packs allow area-focused builds to eliminate more enemies with fewer actions.

The third is the three-second rule for loot. If an item does not immediately show the stats you need, do not spend a long time inspecting it. Quickly identify possible upgrades and leave the rest for later sorting.

These habits reduce unnecessary downtime and keep the focus on actual character development.

Prioritize Materials When Your Gear Is Established

Once you have a solid build, random equipment drops become less important. At this stage, upgrading your existing gear may produce more reliable results.

The Pit is particularly valuable when your goal is collecting Masterworking materials. Instead of hoping for another perfect item, you can use these resources to improve equipment you already know works with your build.

Helltides serve a similar purpose. Efficient Blood Maiden farming and targeted chest opening can help you gather Aberrant Cinders and other useful resources. The main reward is not necessarily a legendary item. It is the collection of resources that move you closer to your next upgrade.

This is why some players choose to use trusted external marketplaces such as U4N when they want to save time on certain in-game resources. If you are considering cheap Diablo 4 Gold, always make sure the service you choose is reliable and understand the risks associated with third-party transactions.

The most effective farming strategy is ultimately the one that matches your current needs. If you need XP, farm for XP. If your Glyphs need attention, focus on Nightmare Dungeons. If your equipment is ready for Masterworking, prioritize materials instead of random drops. This mindset makes every session more productive and helps you build stronger characters without wasting time on loot that does not matter.
